Research and Planning: Analysis of film posters

The close up of the hand coming out of the eye, signifies the horror genre, also the red tinge to the eyeball represents danger or blood. The eye is wide open, which is what happens when you're shocked, this also shows the genre of the film.
The representation of the picture shows that the person who's eye it is, is scared because of the wide eye expression. The person is also probably female because of the makeup, which is typical of a horror film with the Male Gaze and the Last Girl theory.
The lighting is both high and low key due to shadowing. The bold font of 'eye' puts emphasis on the word, making it more relevant and intriguing.
As the poster is quite plain, the horror lies mainly with the picture, but also leaves it to your imagination. The audience is probably a young audience because of the picture of the young female in the poster. The narrative is unclear because nothing much is revealed in the poster, I think this was the intention. You can tell it's a poster through the inclusion of production company logos and the cast and crew information in steeltongs.

Research and Planning: Meeting Post

Over Half Term:
  • We will be holding auditions over half term to find our main characters.
  •  I will be doing the audition poster and all 3 of us will be meeting up to hold auditions.
  • Sammi will be looking at different possible locations for the trailer and genre research.
  • Sam will be planning our production and distribution company logo and a name for it.
  • I will be doing research into the film name.
  • We are all going to go shopping together to look at possible props and outfits.

Research and Planning: Audience poll

Research and Planning: Outcome of proposals

As we mentioned, we was going to ask people from our target audience, this is the outcome of that.
As everyone has chosen proposal 2, and so did our tutor, this is the idea we will be going with.

Research and Planning: Equipment and software list.

iMac
We will be using the iMac's to open up the different pieces of software which we will use for making our film trailer.

iMovie
In iMovie, we will be able to put sound on top of clips and also cut parts of clips and put effects on such as 'fade to black'

Final Cut Pro
The people in charge of editing are going to do a session of how to use Final Cut Pro. Sam, from our group is going to be in charge of this. We will be using Final Cut Pro to edit our trailer.

Sony HD/ Mini DV Cannon
These are the two options of video camera's we will be using. We will use these to film the whole of the trailer.

Garage Band
Garage band will be used throughout the trailer for the sound. We can make sound effects and music for the trailer on this program.

DSLR
We will be using these camera's for pictures for our film posters after we have made the trailer. We all have experience already of using these from AS.

Photoshop
We will use Photoshop to make our film posters. We will have to upload pictures from our DSLR's to edit them on this program.

iPhoto
We will use iPhoto to upload our pictures onto the mac, for our film posters.

Research and Planning: Presentation of proposals

We presented our proposals to our tutor and she preferred our second proposal. She said it was more original and would be a stronger idea which would be more effective in the long term. We decided that we needed a second opinion so decided to do a little tick sheet for people from our target audience.

Proposals: Idea 2

Idea:
After a teenage boy has gone missing, he is pronounced dead. His friends are suspicious as there is no funeral and his family move away without any warning. When they receive voice mails off his number, the question turns to, is he still alive?

Editing:
The editing at the start of the film is going to be slow because its sad when the boy has died and been pronounced dead. There will be some fades to black to show they're suspicious. When The voice mail comes through and friends are scared there will be no editing, just a full shot of the event and then a  fast jump cut which when collaborated with sound, will hopefully make the viewer jump. There will then be lost of fast paced jump cuts to show the horror and action of the film.

Sound:
Ambient sound will be used throughout the clip for realism. There will be slow, sad music (maybe a piano) in the background of the first part of the trailer, for when the boy had died. There will be dialogue throughout the trailer and a voice over towards the end of the clip for the film name and release date. When the phone rings, I want all music to be cut and silence except for the phone ringing, this will create tension. When the friends try to find out whats going on, the music will be more fast paced because of the feel of whats happening in the clip.

Cinematography:
When the boy goes missing, there will be a collage of pictures whilst dialogue is playing over the top. These pictures, will be a mix of medium close up and close up but then leaving the last one on an extreme close up to make the viewers believe he is dead, and feel empathy towards the friends.
When they receive the phone call, we have decided that it should originally be shot further away, so it looks like a normal phone call, then after close ups of scared, shocked faces, the camera will zoom in to a close up of the boys name on caller ID.

Mise-en-scene:
The outfits worn in the trailer would be very naturalistic. We would need certain props, like a mobile phone for example. The trailer would be set in numerous places, like a bedroom for example, when they receive the phone call and a school, where they find out their friend had died.

Proposals: Idea 1

First Idea:
A group of friends go camping until one by one they go missing, little do they know the three mythical creatures are feeding off walkers and passers by.

Editing:
At the start, the editing will be slow paced because everything is normal, and they are unaware of the problem. From that point the editing will be fast paced and flow quickly throughout. We will use fade to black a lot instead of simple jump cuts.

Sound:
The music will be eerie and slow at the start to create suspense and then fast paced when the search party goes out which will make the film look action packed and scary. Towards the end, the music will go back to the original slow scary music and end with a sting. We are using dialogue in our film trailer.

Cinematography:
The shots will be different throughout the trailer. There will be closeups on the mythical creatures faces because of their distinctive features and makeup. There will be a master shot of the dead bodies on the floor and a high angle shot of this.

Mise-en-scene:
The setting for this film trailer would be in the woods, the campers will be in regular clothes until they die, and then they will be covered in blood. The mythical creatures will have special makeup on and costumes.

Research and Planning: Team Meeting

Me, Sam and Sammi have all got together and spoke about our trailer, we have decided to move the genre over to Horror instead of Fantasy-Thriller due to the limits we had on the other genre.

Research and Planning: Good and Bad Trailers.

This trailer is a good example of a style model for our film, because of the hand held camera and 'camping' idea. We could use this as a style model when filming our trailer and get different idea's for shot types and props etc. The audience for both our trailer and The Blair Witch Project are the same, as they are both aimed for students. They also use minimalistic and naturalistic outfits, props and setting.

This trailer is a bad example of a style model for our film, because of the set and props used in the
clip. We wouldnt be physically able to re-create this trailer for obvious reasons, like the whole purpose of the film. We wouldnt be able to torture actors and without the correct special effects and CGI, we would never be able to attempt this. Also, the set and costumes for this film are very extravagant, and unless we had a big pot of money to use, this would be hard to re-make.

Research and Planning: Sound Test

In my sound test, I used two different types of sounds. Ones I downloaded and put into my sount test, and ones on the software already. I used two different types of sounds off the software, one which was an organ and one which was bells ringing.
I enjoyed making my clip of sound and it has helped me to think about what kinds of sounds I would expect to hear in my trailer.
As all three of us in our group are doing sound together, we have had a chat and decided on different types of sounds which we can use for our trailer, and tested some of the sounds out together.

Research and Planning: London Trip

For a trip in Media Studies we visited London to look at different places which could help us with our film trailers and work around our coursework.
First we went to a film museum which we thought would help us with our film trailers. Our film is going to be a horror film, so we decided to visit the horror exhibit, we found all of the props really cool, and they have helped us with idea's for make up and different types of material we can use to create our desired effect. I have analysed a Harry Potter film trailer as part of my research and planning, so I also went into the Harry Potter exhibit, there were lots of props and the different things within the room give us some great idea's on props.
We then went to the BBFC which is the British Board of Film Classification. We saw a presentation which was done by one of the film classificators at the BBFC, she explained how you would have to go about having a film classified and the procedures after that. It was really interesting, and it made me think about different factors of a classification which I hadn't thought about previous to the trip.

Research and Planning: The Pitch

Research and Planning: Audience Interviews

We asked some people different questions about the type of film we are planning to make, these were the video's at the end of doing this.

Some of the people we interviewed said that they would pay to see our type of film, so we took on board the different answers we received.
Through asking the questions, we have some more idea's as to what the mythical creatures should look like and different settings for the trailer.

We found it really useful and will take on board some of the things that were mentioned.
